Making Cents Conference

Sept.28-30 I represented ASDIR and presented at the Making Cents 2009 Global Youth Enterprise Conference in Washington DC on a panel with Grant Ennis. The theme for the panel was Innovative Multi-Sectoral Partnerships that Promote Youth Entrepreneurship: Cases from Central America and India. It was great exposure for the Youth Entrepreneurship program as the presentation sparked many interests. The conference put ASDIR at the forefront of best youth practices around the world, along with many other great organizations.
ASDIR looks forward to coordinating future projects with the many organizations/foundations met at the conference!

Reforestation Project

Last week ASDIR Board of Directors authorized a check for the amount of $100 to JUDENI (Youth for the Development of Nimasac) for a reforestation project. With the money, JUDENI will collaborate with local authorities to plant 500 palo alizo trees, a rapidly disappearing tree in the department of Totonicapan.
I will post a report of the project once it is completed next week.

The Youth Entrepreneurship program invited professional nurses studying in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala to give presentations in basic health themes to over 100 students at the local elementary school in Nimasac. Themes include Basic Hygiene and Changes in Adolesence The first presentation took place August 12. Check the photos section to see how the day went.

Welcome to my first blog site! My name is Addison Embrey and currently I am the ASDIR Youth Entrepreneurship Program Officer in Totonicapan, Guatemala. In May 2008 I graduated from the University of the Pacific and had a desire to return Guatemala, where I studied abroad, to work with youth and microcredit. Here I am a year later pioneering one of the first Youth Entrepreneurship programs in the country for an all-Mayan community-based organization in Totonicapan.
